Review: Clay Gym

Clay is very different from any gym I have visited thus far. The motto for Clay is “Our Temple for Yours” which describes the gym perfectly. Clay was established in 2002, the philosophy is “To support each member in his or her individual pursuit of health, accomplished through the integration of physical training, mindful exercise and nutritional guidance.” The bylaws were even written by their members.

Clay is a very peaceful place, the whole atmosphere exudes it. To get to the gym you need to go up two flights of stairs and then everything is located on one floor. The gym is mostly white with little accents all around. In the middle of the gym sits a beautiful fireplace where the members can come and relax before or after there workouts. Placed all around the gym are coolers with cold lotus towels that you can use after your workout. They smell amazing! The cardio area is well spaced out and wasn’t crowded at all. Each treadmill has their own TV! The workout equipment and machines are spaced out and grouped in different zones. So you don’t feel claustrophobic while walking around. They have two studios where they offer a variety of different classes. They also offer semi-private pilates classes, personal training and nutrition counseling.

The locker rooms are very nice, a little outdated but very nice, they offer all the normal amenities like towels, shampoo, ect. Each of the lockers is a keypad so there is no need for locks. Outside of the locker room is a lounge where you can check your email on their computer and it is the only place cell phones are allowed to be used (this rule was created by the members). I love that cell phones can’t be used in the gym. It gives you a place to escape. They also have a spa and personal saunas that you can use. Located near the front is a little cafe where you can get juice and snacks.

Overall it is a beautiful gym. It is very peaceful which is a nice change from many of the gyms I have visited. The clientele is much older for this gym. You will not find college students roaming around. If you are looking for a peaceful get away for your workouts this is the place. They only have one location which is at 25 West 14th Street. Right outside of Union Square between Avenue of Americas and 5th Avenue. Very easy to get to from any subway that stops in Union Square.

Prices are much more expensive than most clubs. The initiation fee to join is $500 but they run promotions throughout the year so maybe you will join while they are offering a promotion. Monthly dues are $180 a month if you sign a year contract or $200 a month with no contract. They also offer a discount rate if you pay for the entire year up front.

Like I said it is a beautiful gym and a peaceful get-a-way not exactly the speed I am looking for right now but it was beautiful! They offered me two weeks for free so I will be able to tell  you all about the classes! I am so excited! I can’t wait to tell you about my experience.

Review: Nimble Fitness

“Nimble Fitness was established in 2005 and began as a small personal training studio. Today we have expanded into a 3000 sq ft fitness facility, offering integrated personal training, cutting edge classes and holistic workshops and seminars. Our trainers and instructors are experts who have been quoted and referenced by many media outlets, including Shape, People Magazine and Time Out NY.  In 2009 Citysearch voted Nimble Fitness “best personal training” in New York City.”

Nimble Fitness was founded by three guys: Daniel Lucas, Keith Paine, and Antonio Sini. As it says above they just moved into a new space. I just went there this morning to try one of their classes Nimble Fusion. There new space is located at 42 East 12th Street between Broadway and University. It is very easy to get to from any Subway that has a stop in Union Square. The space is very nice, not huge but very nice. It is primarily a personal training studio. When you walk in there is a couple of cardio machines (1 or 2 treadmills and a bike), behind the main desk is a larger room with a pilates reformer machine and weights. The locker rooms have keypad lockers, one shower and a place to change. It is small but nice.

The studio is located downstairs where they hold their classes. The studio is a great space! I really liked it, I think it is great they offer small classes. The one I tried was not my favorite but I hope the others are better. The classes they offer right now are: Nimble Fusion, Soul Mat, Spin, Lunchtime Express, and Yoga Foundations. Along with classes they also offer: Personal Training, Holistic Lifestyle Coaching, and Smart Company Wellness programs. For pricing call Nimble Fitness at (212) 633-9030 or e-mail info@nimblefitness.com.

Overall its a nice small space. This is not a gym but more of an expanded personal training studio.

Review: Dogmatic Restaurant

Dogmatic Restaurant, formerly  known as Dogmatic Gourmet Sausage System is located in Union Square. They started as a simple street cart and now have grown into a restaurant. They have some amazing sausages and serve them in a very unique way.

“ Welcome to Dogmatic Gourmet Sausage System.  We offer the finest street food served in a restaurant environment. Our handcrafted sausages, grilled to order, have no hormones, no antibiotics, no nitrates, no artificial flavors or colors and are naturally low in fat. But they do have an authentic flavor and a unique vertically designed shape, perfect for enjoying them on the go or on the stay. For the vegetarian, we offer spears of locally sourced organic asparagus — the sausage of the vegetable kingdom.”

The restaurant is a little hard to find because it is located right off the Northwest point of Union Square on 17th Street. But is easy to get to from any train that stops in Union Square. Walking into the restaurant looks like you are walking into a kitchen “as the butcher block table is the main focus at the center of the restaurant.”  There is an amazing mural on the side wall, that if you decide to go, you should take a look at. The menu is very simple they offer 5 different sausages (Beef, Chicken, Pork, Turkey, and lamb) and asparagus’s for the vegatarians. The sausages are served in artisan bread that you can choose not to have if you are looking for a low carb option and then paired with your choice of sauce (Cheddar Jalapeno, Horseradish Mustard, Truffle Gruyere, Chimichurri, Sun Dried Tomato Feta, and Mint Yogurt). My favorite sausage is the turkey and I normally get it with Cheddar Jalapeno or Horseradish Mustard. It is amazing! If you are looking for the healthiest option I would go with a Turkey Sausage and the Horseradish sauce or the asparagus with the horseradish mustard. I also heard they may be expanding the menu, so keep checking back!

The offer some amazing sides, my favorite is their Tomato Salad, which is cherry tomatoes with an garlic oil/basil dressing but they also have great macaroni and cheese, grilled asparagus, and coleslaw. For drinks they make handmade sodas which are made with fresh fruit puree, syrup mixes and carbonated water. I tried the lemon lime flavor which I was not a fan of but they have other great flavors.

If you are ever in Union Square go to Dogmatic and give it a try, it is reasonably inexpensive ($4.50 for the gourmet sausages, $3.00 for the sides). It is really good and I think you will enjoy it! Let me know what combination you try!

Review: Bikram Yoga Union Square

The first studio I visited was Bikram Yoga Union Square (BYUS). BYUS is located on Broadway between 13th and 14th Street, it is very easy to get to off the 4,5,6 subway. You walk into the building and take an elevator up. The reception area was very nice and smelled very good, which is a huge plus for a Bikram Yoga Studio, most studios you will go to will smell. The receptionist was very nice and gave me the first time student special which is for unlimited classes for 1 week for  $20. Towels, mats, and water all cost extra. I was prepared and brought my own mat and water.

When you go to a Bikram Yoga class you want to have a mat, a large towel for your mat, a small towel to wipe yourself off during class and a large bottle of water. Do NOT wear pants, you will sweat so much during this class that it will be uncomfortable after. The best apparel for Bikram is shorts (the tighter the better and I would not recommend cotton, trust me), and a tank top.

I walked into the locker room which was rather small and had three showers, I was happy I lived close enough that I did not have to shower there. After putting my stuff away I walked into the room. The room was a decent size and had blue carpeting. There will large windows at the end of the room. I laid my stuff at and laid down until class started. By the time class was starting the room was filled, not only were there newbies there were the super serious Bikram Yogi’s that you could tell went to class every other day. I had taken a class with Otto Cedeno. He walked into the room and immediately had us start. I can not lie but for the first 30 minutes of class I wanted to cry. Otto was very serious and made sure that we took the class serious too. If we were not coming up at the same time or holding it, he would have us do it again. I was thinking I would never do this again but as the class went along I started to understand why he did that. He said “He loves practicing Bikram Yoga because it makes him as strong as the practice is.” Which is true it is a very strong practice and if you stick through the entire class you feel very empowered and refreshed (apart from that the fact that you look like you jumped into the pool and you need to take a shower immediately). During the class Otto made sure to let fresh air into the room and helped everyone perfect their positions. He made everyone push themselves but knew where peoples limitations were.

By the end of class I was so happy I came and I was glad that Otto pushed me to do better. I really liked Bikram Yoga Union Square, the staff was friendly, the room smelled good (which is rare), and it was a great class. The only thing I did not like was how small the locker rooms were. After class all the women were lined up to take a shower and there was barely any privacy. I sadly did not get to come back anymore that week due to my hectic schedule but I would have gone back if I had time. I will be trying Bikram Yoga NYC and Bikram Yoga Manhattan soon and I will let you know what I think and which is the best studio out of the three. Bikram Yoga Union Square only has one location so if you live next to Union Square your in luck. To find out more information on the Studio go to www.bikramyogaunionsquare.com.
