SELF Magazine Workout in the Park 2012 Giveaway!

I know this is crazy two posts in one day but summer is coming and that means it’s time for the annual SELF Workout in the Park! I was lucky enough to attend SELF magazine’s Workout in the Park back in 2010, sadly I was not in town last year but I can’t wait to go again this year! I met some amazing people when I went the last time and I am really looking forward to this year.

This is SELF magazine’s 19th Annual Workout in the Park event.  It takes place on Saturday, May 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Rumsey Playfield in New York.  It will happen rain or shine! SELF Workout in the Park  features a full day of hands-on workouts and workshops. You can also enjoy a sampling of healthy and delicious foods, indulge in mini-spa services, demo the latest beauty and fitness products and score lots of free samples and goodies courtesy of SELF’s sponsors.  This year the workout in the park will be hosted by Dolvett Quincecelebrity trainer on The Biggest LoserWorkouts are provided and led by Crunch and this year there is even a Reebok  Zone where you can do a Crossfit WOD. Some of the workouts they will have this year are: Ab Attack, Fly Girls, Sucker Punch, and Tabura. To see the entire class schedule click here.

Tickets for the event are $20 but it includes a one-year subscription to SELF magazine. You can not purchase tickets on site so you must buy them online ahead of time. So grab some girlfriends and come to Central Park to check out this fun event, I will be there (most likely in hot pink).

I am excited to announce that one Shape Up NYC reader can win a SELF Fit Kit (valued at $200) and a pass to the SELF Workout in the Park! Review: Mandy Ingber • Yogalosophy

Anyone’s who mantra is “I have a great ass” is okay by me.

At Self Workout in the Park, I was fortunate enough to meet Mandy Ingber. Mandy Ingber is Jennifer Aniston’s yoga instructor and recently came out with a new workout DVD. After reading about her DVD and how she introduced Jennifer Aniston to yoga I knew I had to meet her! She was so nice and full of energy. While I was there I picked up a copy of her DVD, Yogalosophy. I have always been skeptical about yoga. I love Bikram because it is so hot that I don’t have much time to think and I just need to keep breathing to get through it. The couple of yoga classes I have taken I was not a fan of. I always thought it moved too slow and I just couldn’t stand it. My mind would constantly travel during class and would not let me stay in the room. After trying her DVD I have fallen in love and this will be the one DVD a take with me anytime I have to travel and want to workout while I am away.

Mandy’s DVD has two 30 minute workouts, one 55 minute workout, a couple of extras and a quick introduction from both her and Jennifer Aniston. The two 30 minute workouts are the same workouts except one is with Mandy’s commentary and one other one is silent. I HIGHLY recommend doing the one with the commentary. The workout is a mix of yoga and toning poses and I have to say I loved it. For a thirty minute workout it covers all the muscle groups: calves, glutes, arms, abs. She does every pose twice for a set of 8 and then pulses at the end. Why 8? Because 8 is the number of power and abundance. The Fully loaded challenge workout is a 55 minute routine, which I also enjoyed. This one is similar to the 30 minute routine with more yoga poses  infused into it.

Now it wasn’t just Mandy’s workout that made me love this DVD, it was Mandy. I have never met anyone so funny! I was literally laughing out loud while doing this DVD. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a workout DVD this much. Mandy is just so real and down to earth. With her mantra “I have a great ass” how can you possibly go wrong. I can completely understand why people love her and why Jennifer Aniston loves her. I would give anything to be able to take one of her classes in California.

If you are looking for a traditional yoga DVD, this is not the DVD for you. This is a hybrid yoga. I really liked the instruction of the DVD but sometimes you may get a little lost because she is not always telling you what comes next. But even with this said I really enjoyed the DVD, she made yoga enjoyable and fun for me. The DVD costs $29.95 which you can buy on her website. I feel this is expensive, so if you are on a budget check to see if they have it at the library or on Netflix. If you are looking to spice up your yoga routine and have an amazing instructor than the price will be worth it. I thought it was a great, quick, and effective workout. I also could not be more in love with Mandy herself. She made yoga fun!

Self Workout in the Park 2010

Yesterday was the annual Self Workout in the Park! Being fairly new to New York City, I decided I had to try it. After all, who doesn’t want to spend all day in Central Park working out. I met up with many of my fellow New York Bloggers: Missy Maintains, Fitness NYC, Julie Go Lean, Miss Chubby Hubby, Living Life Anti-Blah, Namaste Mari, and Food Snob. It was my first time meeting most of them and I had so much fun!

The event was extremely organized, check in took no longer than 10 minutes and we were on our way into the Park. The area felt a little small for all the girls and the few guys that were there. There was a Rebounding area, Quiet Zone (yoga), and the main stage. Each area except for the main stage held about 25-30 people at a time. The main stage was completely open and would pack in as many as you want. Each class would last around 25 minutes. The Rebounding and the Quiet Zone was very hard to get into because so many people wanted to take those classes. The best way to go was to stay at the main stage and do all the workouts they offered there. Some of the workouts on the main stage included: Masala Bhangra, Ab Attack, Cardio Tai Box, and Rock Bottom.

Around the areas were all the sponsors of the event. Some tents were better than others but I found some great products. My favorite sponsors of the event were: Reebok Easy Tones, Soy Joy, Silk, Almond Breeze, and Jane Iredale.

Reebok Easy Tone: I have always been a huge fan of these shoes! The idea came from the Balance Balls that you can find in gyms. “Our proprietary toning technology is based on the benefits of Instability Training that have been proven over time to tone your muscles.” I have never owned them, but hopefully that will change soon and I will write a review shortly so stay tuned. They also recently have added Easy Tone’s where you can create your own!

Soy Joy:  I had actually never had a Soy Joy bar until yesterday and I fell in love. I tried their new flavor Blueberry and I am now hooked. With only 140 calories, 0g Trans Fat, Gluten Free, and around 20 ingredients they are easily my favorite snack bars. Most snack bars like Nutri•Grain and Chewy Bars have over 50 ingredients! If you want a quick snack this would be the way to go!

Jane Iredale: Is a mineral make-up line. They had an amazing lip plumper that I didn’t think I would like but after putting it on, I loved it!

Overall I had an amazing time. The event was extremely organized and they had some great classes. I did feel the space they used was a bit small for all the people they had attend. I wish they could have used a larger space so I wouldn’t have felt like I was working out on top of someone and the classes were a little longer than 20 minutes. But I met some amazing people and had a great time. I plan on going back next year!
