BluePrintCleanse: Recap Day 3/4

Sorry for the delay, work got really hectic again. Day 3 was the worst day of the cleanse. I got through day 1 and 2 pretty easy but by day 3 I was just bored.  The juices are good but I was just bored I wanted variety. I got through the first 3 juices pretty slowly by 4 I just wasn’t having it. Work was really crazy, I was in no mood to drink any more juice. I tried to sip on the last one but it didn’t really help. Oh and each day I only drank 5 of the juices. By the time I got to the 6th juice I was too full and the Cashew Milk was just too much. By 9pm I was still at work and frustrated so I gave in and ordered a cucumber roll from a nearby sushi place. Granted I didn’t order anything else, but that probably wasn’t the best to do.

Day 4 I tried the Juice Til’ Dinner. It was four juices and raw food for dinner. I have to say by day four I was completely done, so I did not follow it exactly. I had a juice for breakfast, I ate the raw food for lunch, and then I had another juice as a snack. I ate a normal dinner. The raw food they supply you with is really good. I had Spaghetti Puttanesca, it was ribbons of yellow squash with savory ‘meatballs’ and a rich tomato sauce. I also got a lemon bar as a snack. Both things were extremely good, the meatballs were a little strange but not bad.

It was I also did not come off they cleanse like they recommended. I did not feel sick, but I didn’t eat too crazy so that may be why.

I am glad I did the BluePrintCleanse, it showed me that I can stick to something. Granted I ate something late at night on the 3rd night, I still was able to get through it. Would I do it again? I don’t think I would do three days again. I wouldn’t mind doing one or two. Three was just a little too much for me. I didn’t feel much different after, I think it really depends on the person. I have girlfriends that live by it, but I am a foodie and I think I would rather do a fruit and vegetable cleanse than a juice cleanse.

BluePrintCleanse: Day 2 Recap

Here we go day 2. The first day of the cleanse you are so excited, you have your black lunch bag and you are happy that you are doing something extreme. You carry you black lunch bag with pride to work, slightly feeling cool. While everyone looks at you like your crazy. Well that “cool feeling” ends at the end of the first night. I was so full of liquid after the first day, I had no idea how I would do it again tomorrow.

I woke up this morning dreading that I had to start drinking again. I got through my first three juices pretty slow. I actually have no problem with the juices, the green one shockingly isn’t that bad. My least favorite is the 5th juice (The beet one). My biggest problem is that I miss food and I am bored of my choices. I miss variety. You only have 6 juices, not much variety there. I did have cucumber today because I wanted to chew on something and something different. Luckily cucumber is on the cheat list. Surprisingly I am not hungry throughout the day. If I get hungry I grab my juice.

Now being at the end of the day it wasn’t that bad, I made it through day two! I only have a day and a half left. I did a 3 day cleanse and then on the fourth day I decided to try Juice ‘Til dinner. It’s a way to ease off your cleanse, you have four juices and then BluePrintCleanse sends you dinner and dessert. I am really excited for day 4. Not as excited for day 3, I want my food back! Until tomorrow have a good night!

BluePrintCleanse: Day 1 Recap

So I still have a lot of work to do and 1 juice left but I wanted to let you know how the first day went.

If you didn’t read my last post I have decided to do the BluePrintCleanse. I needed something drastic to test my willpower and get me back on track. I went with the Level 1: Renovation cleanse, mostly because I have never done a cleanse before and I wanted to ease myself back into it. The cleanse consists of six juices:

  1. Green Juice: Romaine, Celery, Cucumber, Green Apple, Spinach, Kale, Parsley, Lemon
  2. PAM: Pineapple, Apple, Mint, Filtered Water
  3. Green Juice: Romaine, Celery, Cucumber, Green Apple, Spinach, Kale, Parsley, Lemon
  4. Spicy Lemonade: Filtered Water, Lemon, Agave Nectar, Cayenne
  5. CAB: Apple, Carrot, Beet, Lemon, Ginger
  6. Cashew Milk: Filtered Water, Raw Cashews, Agave Nectar, Vanilla Bean, Cinnamon

You are not allowed to have ANY food. The only other things you are allowed to have other than the juice are warm or room temperature water, when you wake up and in between each juice. And as much green tea as you would like.

I have to say I was very scared about the green juice and it wasn’t as bad as I expected. It is one of the harder ones to drink during the day. Each juice takes about an hour to drink a little longer if I am drinking the green juice, it’s just very dense. The other juice I found a little harder to get down was the CAB and it had a slightly bitter aftertaste (I am assuming that it is the beet) but it is no means unbearable.

My favorite juices in this order were: Spicy Lemonade, Cashew Milk, and PAM. SHOCKER! Those are the good ones without the vegetables. The Cashew Milk is like a milk shake ( I took a little sip so I could write this for you, I have another good hour until I get to it). I have to say I wish there were only 5 juices instead of 6, it is just so much liquid. Sadly I don’t think I have ever consumed this much liquid in one day.

So I bet you’re wondering… How do I feel? Well let me tell you… It is SO weird not eating food. It is not that I go through the day hungry because shockingly I am not, I think because your stomach is so full of liquid, there really isn’t room for anything else. But I miss the act of eating, I realize how much pointless snacking I do throughout the day. Every time I am at my computer and I didn’t want to stare at the screen I would just get up and grab a cookie or cracker. But now that I can’t it’s a little weird, I find myself having to get up and take a short walk instead of getting food. So that is good! But I still MISS FOOD. I am doing okay though, I haven’t eaten anything.

Also and I don’t know why but real food looks more appetizing than processed food (and I am not just saying this, try this and you will understand). I went to Whole Foods with my friend to get out of the office and I walked by someone with pizza and that just didn’t look good but then I walked by someone with roasted chicken and red skin potatoes and that was mouth-watering! I think because I am not able to have ANY food, that I find the more hardy and fulfilling meals look more appetizing.

Okay well I have to get back to work, should be interesting to see how I am doing tomorrow, look for the recap tomorrow night I am sure it will be interesting! Fingers crossed I am not grumpy.

To Cleanse or Not to Cleanse

Wanna drop 5 pounds in 5 days! Try a Fat Flush or 21 pound in 21 days!

No No and No! Cleanses… I know you have heard about them and you may have even wanted to try one, heck I wanted to try one, but there are a few things you should know before you do. Celebrities like Beyoncé, Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek, and trainers like David Kirsch give detoxes a healthy stamp of approval and are trying to make them fashionable, but with a little research you will realize they really aren’t that fashionable.

I was walking the aisles of Whole Foods, with a close friend of mine, buying the ingredients for the master cleanse after putting the last ingredient in my basket, I looked down and said “You have to be kidding me; lemons, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and “pure” water for the next 10-14 days will not cut it for me.” I put the ingredients back on the shelf and headed to my computer. The thought of detoxing my body and losing a couple of pounds was very alluring but I love food, I love nutrients (proteins, whole grains, fresh fruit, ect. don’t worry cookies are in there too!), and honestly I can’t imagine a day without it. After doing some research this is what I have found.

WebMD says “According to doctors and registered dietitians who spoke to WebMD, the answer is a resounding “no.” A day on a detox diet program probably won’t hurt you, but there’s little point in following these restrictive diets – and they can do far more harm than good, says Michelle May, MD, author of Am I Hungry? What to Do When Diets Don’t Work. ”Extreme diets generally do little more than cause frustration, are potentially dangerous, and are in general are a waste of time and money,” May says.”

In March Vogue came out with an article called “Coming Clean” and the truth about cleanses. They mentioned some of the “benefits” of a cleanse and the truth behind it. Some of the benefits are:

  • Rid your body of a lifetime of toxic chemicals: “The liver and kidneys are nature’s best-kept secret, because they are the weapons to eliminate toxins from your body,” says Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD.”If you are concerned about certain substances in your diet, it is easier and safer to simply eliminate [those substances] rather than engage in unhealthy detox plans.” Your body is already built to get rid of toxins in the body!
  • Drop two dress sizes: Vogue reports “Without enough protein, the body turns to muscle for fuel after about three days, which can make weight loss appear more dramatic because of muscle’s bulk.” Those pounds you’re shedding may be valuable muscle, and not fat. Losing muscle slows down your metabolism too, meaning you’ll probably gain more weight in the end.” Beyoncé said she lost 20 pounds on the Master cleanse and you probably will lose a lot of weight but not putting anything into your body but as soon as you start eating again you will gain it back very quickly. By following a very restrictive diet can slow your metabolism, making it harder to lose weight once you start eating again.
  • Look ten years younger: “The upside of pumping gallons of water and vitamin-rich juice into your system—and eliminating stressors like sugar, caffeine, and alcohol—is that it will plump skin, resulting in the celebrated cleansing glow, says Joseph Greco, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA. The downside is that the boost may be short-lived.”
  • Experience Euphoria: Now this one I have to say is different for everyone. Melissa wrote a post aboutBPC and BCP, and how it helped her clear her head, now for some it can help. Do I think you should do a cleanse for the reason of weight loss, no, but say it has been very hectic in your life and you want something to physically reset you, not just mentally, a cleanse may work. There are healthy fruit cleanses and othercleanses out there.

Cleanses don’t have to be bad, they can be a great way to reset. Just be careful and thoughtful as to why you want to do one. If you feel like you just need something to reset go ahead and do one for a day or two. Or if you are like me they may not be for you. Check out Melissa’s other post on 10 Minute Detox for other ways to reset. For me personally it’s lighting candles and listening to Modern Meditations or taking a candle lit or hot yoga class :) .
