Does Muscle Weigh more than Fat?

I took a Core Fusion class last night and after someone asked me “How much weight have you lost while doing Core Fusion?” I explained to her that I haven’t lost much weight but I have lost 4 inches on each thigh and a couple inches everywhere else. Not only did I lose inches but I am much toner than I used to be and my clothes fit better. Core Fusion helps you gain lean muscle mass which is better for your body. I told her muscle weighs more than fat and after I said that I started to wonder if that was actually true…

I have always been an advocate of measuring yourself rather than weighing yourself. Losing inches to me is more important than losing weight. I always used the saying muscle weighs more than fat, and guess what I found out… muscle does NOT weigh more than fat. 1 pound of muscle weighs 1 pound and 1 pound of fat weighs 1 pound.  A pound is a pound. Here is the difference between muscle and fat, a pound of fat is much more bulky and take up more room than a pound of muscle. Muscle is leaner and does not take up as much room. So in terms of volume fat will take up more room and will make you look more bulky.

The next thing I learned is fat does not turn into muscle. You can lose fat and gain muscle but fat can not just turn into muscle. Now the reason why I think that measuring yourself makes more sense than weighing yourself is because “the scale only tells you your entire body weight. It does not tell you the composition of that weight. And it is body composition that really matters.” says William R. Sukala, MS, CS, a personal trainer. He also said “Because a pound of muscle burns more fat than a pound of fat, even at rest, by increasing your lean muscle tissue mass, you’re helping your body burn more calories. If you only have a small amount of weight to lose, then you may feel like the weight training is not helping you move down on the scale. In fact, the number may even go up, but you will look thinner. This is due to an increase in lean body mass (muscle, bone, blood volume) and a decrease in body fat. In other words, even if the scale doesn’t change much, you will probably see a difference in how your clothes fit.”

If you have never taken a body composition you should see if you gym offers body composition testing, to get an idea of where your body is. This will not only help you understand your body better but help you choose workouts that will work for you. Martica Heaner, M.A., M.Ed., for MSN Health & Fitness says “If someone is working out and not losing weight, or not losing as much as they want—or if they’re actually gaining weight—the first place to look is the type and amount of exercise. Weight loss boils down to burning more calories than you normally use in a day. Cardio exercise burns more calories than muscle-toning or the average resistance-training workout. So dialing down the stretching and core work to just once or twice a week, and replacing it with more cardio should produce more weight loss. And the more minutes the better when it comes to weight loss.”

So now you know, muscle does not weigh more than fat and if you already knew thanks for reading my blog!

Review: Cuerpaso!

What would you get if you mixed soccer with dance? Cuerpaso! I know that doesn’t mean much now but after 35 minutes of non stop movement, it means a lot. The founder of Cuerpaso, Tadeo decided that if you mixed soccer and dance you would have the ultimate body workout, not a bad idea, think David Beckham and Julianne Hough. Who wouldn’t want to look like the two of them!

Cuerpaso®, Spanish for ‘The Ultimate Body’, is a high-paced 50 minute boot camp escape to Latin America created by international fitness and health sensation, Tadeo. Lose fat and sculpt lean muscle with this high-paced intense workout. Shatter your plateau! Tadeo’s positive and exciting approach to exercise will inspire you to stick with this program that’s as fun as it is effective.”

I found out that Tadeo teaches classes at the New York Health and Racquet Club every Wednesday at 7:15pm. So I went to their 21st street location to try it out. I walked into the dance room and immediately recognized Tadeo from his website, he is a very energetic and sweet guy until he said these words… “This will last either 35-45 minutes depending on if I give you a break or not”. My first reaction was “Am I really going to get a good workout from this in 35 minutes?” My second reaction came 10 minutes later while I was out of breath and sweat was pouring down my face ” Okay, yup I am going to get a workout from this.”

The class is just how he explains it a high energy, fast paced, non-stop cardio mix of soccer drills and dance. The only equipment you use is a soccer ball which after 5 drills you may want to pick up and throw across the room (just kidding!) Tae Bo has quite a contender with Cuerpaso! It was such a fun class, I was sweating like crazy, having a blast, and my legs burned like crazy. It is the perfect mix of soccer and dance so you do not have to be an all-star dancer or soccer player. The music is so much fun, it will make you want to keep going even when you think you can’t. There were two brave men in the class who were even sweating harder than me so I knew this was not an easy task! I would have liked the class to be longer even though, I know I would be dying by the end but Tadeo did say it’s not how long you workout, it is if you are doing it correctly.

If you think it sounds like fun (which it is) but you don’t live in New York, he sells the DVD on his website. Also if you do want to try it you can e-mail a membership consultant at NYHRC and they can set you up with a guest pass to try the class or leave a comment here and I will give you the e-mail address of who you should contact!

Check out a short video of the class from Daily Candy! He says that after 6 weeks of his class you will be able to walk the beach with pride, I may buy the DVD and take him up on that challenge, as long as the beach is included in the end ;)

Review: Core Fusion Sport at Exhale Spa

Get ready to sweat! I know a lot of people ask what is the difference between Core Fusion and Core Fusion Sport. Exhale says “Our newest proprietary class, Core Fusion® Sport, is a total body workout that is designed to help you improve your performance in sports while reducing your risk of sports related injuries.

Using a combination of lateral and twisting movements, this barreless one-hour class will chisel and firm your arms, shoulders, legs and butt while focusing on your core – the center of your strength. This calorie-burning cardio class works with resistance bands, core balls, and mat abdominals with periodic jump backs for cardio and stamina benefits. Balanced flexibility exercises at the end will cool you down and increase your range of movement for sports. We hold this class in a slightly elevated temperature room with motivating music, so be prepared to sweat and work out with a passion!”

The class primarily focuses on the use of a core ball which is about 6 pounds. You start out with stretching to warm up your muscles then you move into the jump back series with some toning moves in between. The jump back is a 6 count move where you raise the core ball up, down, jump back, and then jump up. It really gets your heart rate up and after 5 of these you can really start to feel it working. In between the jump backs you do push ups with one hand on the ball and then switch hands. You work your way up from 4 push ups to 10 on each side. It is one of my favorite kind of push ups. After you finish the jump back series which lasts about 30-40 minutes you move to the ground to use the resistance bands for glutes. I love using the resistance bands for glutes because you can really feel it working the muscle and you can change the resistance to your level. You finish class with abs and stretching.

I know a couple of people just starting out at Exhale that like this class better because it is more cardio and after they build up their strength they start adding Core Fusion classes into their schedule.

When I first took this class a year ago I was not a fan but I was told to maximize my Core Fusion practice I needed to add cardio in the mix and Core Fusion Sport would be a great addition. I hesitantly went back to Core Fusion Sport classes and now I love them! By adding this to my workout I have seen even better results. I am starting to get shoulders which is something I have worked on for a while. Now by the time summer rolls around I will be ready to wear sleeveless shirts! If you haven’t gotten a chance to try this class I highly recommend it. If some of the moves are hard on your joints during jump backs there are always modifications you can make.

Exhale is also coming out with a Core Fusion Cardio class soon and as soon as I can try it I will write a review!

Review: Dance with Julianne Cardio Ballroom

I am not going to lie, being a huge Country Music fan I wanted to try Julianne Hough’s Cardio Ballroom workout. What is not to like about Julianne Hough, she is beautiful, she can sing and she can dance. Who wouldn’t want to look like her, or for those fans of Dancing with the Stars, dance like her. Her DVD has  3 parts:

  • Cardio Ballroom Workout
  • Personal Dance Lesson
  • Behind the Scenes Interview

Here are a couple of things, you will look silly, I used to be a dancer and even I didn’t get this the first time. I was so glad my roommate wasn’t home to watch me. This is primarily a cardio dance DVD. There are no strength exercises only dances. It is a fun way to get some more cardio into your workout routine. If you have never danced before this will be more difficult she moves pretty fast and doesn’t tell you what foot your starting on, you have to mirror her. Now I won’t tell you if you haven’t danced to not get it because you can it will just take longer to nail the moves.

If you have never danced before or even if you have I recommend doing the personal dance lesson, she breaks down some of the more difficult moves for you more slowly. This was a huge help. I was a little upset that she only broke down about 6 moves because there are some things that will take you a couple of times to learn. It is only 12 minutes so it doesn’t take much time.

The cardio dance workout lasts about 40 minutes. It starts with a quick warm up and then you move into the cha cha. The cha cha was a lot of fun and it was a sexy little dance. I did not get this the first time, and I looked pretty stupid doing it. The second dance, and in my opinion the most fun even if you look stupid is the Jive. This one even if I wasn’t doing it correctly I felt like I was getting my heart rate up. The last dance is the Paso Doble which is the most serious and you need to position yourself correctly to get the benefits. This one I looked pretty ridiculous doing but got better towards the end.

Overall, Julianne is a descent instructor. She does move quickly which will get discouraging but the best advice I have is to keep doing it. You will not have this DVD down the first time, maybe not even the second, third time or fourth time. It moves very fast. Julianne is very sweet so it doesn’t make it too intimidating and she comes up with funny names for all the dance moves so when she shouts it out you know what is coming next. Some names are: the twist, the flirt, the hussle, the cape, and the kill.

In order for you to get a good workout you MUST do it full out every time and you have to work on your positioning. If you don’t do it full out you won’t even get out of breath, and if you don’t work on positioning you will not be targeting all the muscles you could have. If you watch Julianne she does it full out every time. For $7.99 on Amazon  it is not a horrible DVD. In my opinion is it the best, no but it was fun.  If you like dance or you want to learn some quick easy dances to get your heart rate up this is not a bad option. Will it leave you feeling like you just had the most amazing workout of your life, probably not. I do not recommend this DVD to anyone that does not like dancing and really wants to be sweating heavily by the end of their workout. I will give it a couple more tries and update you with my progress but I have to say I miss my Tae Bo.
