Review: The Black Box, Crossfit NYC

When my good friend, Bianca from MizzFit, asked me to try Crossfit with her, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Crossfit has been becoming quite the fitness phenomenon and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Bob Harper, trainer from the Biggest Loser, swears by it.

“Dude, it has been the best, most eye-opening experience for me. I’ve been in the training business for over twenty years and all of a sudden I start doing Crossfit and you know what it just all makes sense to me now.” – Bob Harper

It also caught my attention when Reebok came out with an entire clothing and shoe line exclusively for Crossfit. If this workout has its own line of clothing it must be good (clearly my head is in the right place). Crossfit was founded in 2000 by Greg Glassman. Crossfit is known for its virtual online community where the workout of the day (WOD) is posted daily along with blog posts about members and the upcoming games. You can participate in Crossfit two ways, either on your own getting by getting your workouts online daily or going to one of 3,400 CrossFit-affiliated gyms (aka “boxes”) worldwide (most are located in the US). In 2010 Reebok signed a 10-year deal with Crossfit, and in 2011 sponsored the annual Crossfit games which have been going on since 2007.

So what exactly is Crossfit? Crossfit is exercise program that focuses on strength and conditioning with the goal of improving your fitness level. “Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing.”

If you really want to know all the details click here and enjoy the 11 page read. The types of exercises you can expect to see at a Crossfit gym  are functional movements (like pushups and pullups, deadlifts and squats, gymnastics, kettlebells, running, rowing, and olympic lifting), executed at high intensity in a group setting.

In New York City there are 6 “boxes”. I checked out the Black Box (aka Crossfit NYC) located on 25 West 26th Street. Walking the couple of blocks from my apartment to the Black Box I was extremely nervous, I had no idea what to expect. All I had heard was everyone passes out and since I have T-Rex arms I knew my chances of this happening to me were great. I walked into a large loft space that had bench presses around the outside of the room, pull up bars hanging all around the room and various fitness equipment scattered about. There was a WOD class going on as well as a clearly experienced Crossfitter with his shirt off running laps around the loft (I did not mind this). I would say the make-up of the people there were mostly guys but there was a good amount of girls there as well. Since I got there early I decided to make friends with some of the guys standing around me. One said he had been going there for a couple of months so he could get back in shape. He said so far the results has been great. He also reassured me I wouldn’t die (thank goodness, I had a double Soul Cycle class the next day I did not want to miss).

The way the classes are set up is there is an intro class which anyone can take for free (did you see that, I said FREE). After you take the intro class you can decide if you want to sign up for the two-week elements workshop. The elements workshop meets 3x a week for two weeks (6 sessions total in case you didn’t drink your coffee today). EVERYONE MUST TAKE THE ELEMENTS WORKSHOP to be allowed into their WOD classes. It does not matter how fit you are you must take this workshop. You would be surprised how many people do not know the correct way to do a proper squat or pushup. Once you have completed the elements workshop you can start doing the WOD workouts. The Black Box offers 3 different WODs: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

I was lucky enough to drop-in on one of the sessions of the elements course. That day we were learning the proper form of a pushup, squat, and a pull-up from a badass instructor named Jeff. The first 45 minutes of the class went through the proper forms of the exercises and the last 15 minutes was dedicated to a workout. During the 45 minutes of proper form it was quite educational to learn that I could not do a pushup with my T-Rex arms and watching me TRY to get into a sling band to help me with my pull-ups was highly entertaining. MizzFit was kicking herself for not filming me (I was honestly happy she couldn’t get to her phone in time). During the last 15 minutes I was put through a workout that  would result in me not being able to walk for the next 3 days. What did this magical workout consist of, you ask… 1 minute of squats with a 10 second rest x 4 and 1 minute of pushups with a 10 second rest x 4. That was it! And I am telling you I could NOT walk. It was the most pain my legs had been in (my legs hurt more from this than from running a half marathon).

After my experience I can now see why people do it and get addicted to it. You get great results and you build strength (you can also wear the cool knee-high socks everyone seems to wear, but you should know this trend hasn’t picked up in New York yet). The key to this workout is just showing up. If you don’t show up, you won’t get results it is that simple. MizzFit had a different viewpoint on the class which I am sure she will write about soon so check out her website. Will I join? I don’t know yet because I love trying lots of different classes (but that tends to be my downfall in fitness, too much variety). If I do join I will make sure to let you know. Review: SoulCycle, my other lover

For those of you who know me, I tend to become obsessed with things I love quickly. SoulCycle happens to be one of those things (and if you follow me on twitter you already know this, you are ahead of the game). I have always been a huge fan of biking and spinning. I first got into biking with my Dad, it was a way we could hang out together without any distractions (it is quite hard to send a text or take a phone call while riding along the coast of California, believe me I tried it did not end well). When I moved to New York, I was quite hesitant to ride outside because New York is a hard city to ride in so I looked to spinning classes.

When I belonged to Equinox, I was a religious rider and loved taking their High Gear class. When I gave up my membership I stopped spinning. A couple of months later while I was in a Refine class I heard someone go “This class was insane, we were waving towels over our head! I will be going back to SoulCycle all the time now!”. After hearing that I knew I had to take a class. I signed up for a 2:00pm class in Union Square which I would take after my 12:00pm Refined class. I thought how hard could this be in it just spinning.

I got to class 30 minutes early, the studio was beautiful. They offered me free shoes since it was my first class (luckily I own them, but it is a $3 rental if you do not have them). I went downstairs put my stuff in my locker and went back upstairs. Just as I was finishing putting on my shoes the class before mine walked out. They were drenched.

Small warning bells started going off in my head, what had I gotten myself into, I thought this was just spin, but these people clearly were on a whole other level. They cleaned the room and let us in, it was dark and lit by candles and smelled like grapefruit (let me tell you how thankful I was for this, I was slightly nervous about what it would smell like based on what the people looked like from the class before). I got on my bike and immediately noticed how close all the bikes were and the giant speakers above my head. Warning bell number 2, this was not like any other spin class I have ever taken. A cute girl named Madison came walking in, in converse high tops (I should mention I now want to own converse high tops) and started the music. It was fast and had a great beat, I almost felt like I was in a club and then it happened… The entire class went from just spinning to dipping down on the bike in unison. I was amazed! It dancing while spinning.

SoulCycle is a 45 minute class that consists of dips, push-ups, jumping, tap backs, and other rhythm movements.  It also has an arm section that can last anywhere from 4-7 minutes (yes, you are lifting weights while spinning I promise you won’t fall off the bike). Everyone in class is required to wear clip in shoes ($3 rental) and I highly recommend water  ($2 if you forget your own). The class itself costs $32, yes I realize this is crazy expensive and so do the instructors. The first class I took with Madison she said “I know you just paid $32 for this class so I am going to give you the workout you deserve!” And she did I came out feeling like a new person that looked like they just went swimming in a pool.

Yes SoulCycle does have its drawbacks: it is super expensive, they do not offer any discounts or membership prices, they only have showers at two locations, and their lobbies tend to be small. But even with all these drawbacks they still get me to come twice a week (putting me farther and farther into debt ;) ). The reasons why SoulCycle is so addicting and people pay the money they do is for the following reasons:

  1. The instructors, the passion they have for what they do and their students is amazing. They make you want to come back to their class every week. They make it a point to know your name and make you feel like you are a part of something. I have a couple of instructors that I would never miss a class with!
  2. The music, great music will make any class fly by and makes me feel like I am in a dance club every time
  3. The Soul Community, I have made some amazing friends at Soul Cycle who all have the same passion as me. It is great to have that kind of support, they motivate me to make better choices and push me harder in class. I even have friends in WEHO (West Hollywood) who I have yet to meet! – Noa I am coming for you ;)

I just started taking classes in February so I have yet to try all the instructors (I will give you an update when I do) but in the meantime below are some rockstars that you have to check out if you go to SoulCycle.

If you ever want to take class, email me! I am always up to go to SoulCycle.

There is a New Studio in Town • SLT NYC

I have had a new-found love for pilates, so one day when I was online looking for a studio I came across SLT • Strengthen • Lengthen • Tone NYC. The headline said:

“If Cardio, Strength Training, and Pilates had a baby… It would be SLT”

As soon as I read that I knew I had to try it. With all the running I have been doing, I have had a really hard time trying to find time to strength train and I thought this would be the perfect class to try. So today my sister, Molly who writes Damsel in a dDress, a style and wellness blog, decided to check it out.

SLT is based on Sebastien Lagree’s acclaimed Megaformer classes (called SPX or Pilates Plus)  in Los Angeles. Sebastien Lagree is a celebrity trainer in Los Angeles but what sets Sebastien apart from the rest of celebrity trainers in Hollywood is that Sebastien designs, prototypes, manufactures, and distributes his own equipment. Sebastien’s first design was called the Proformer in 2003 which was originally designed to solve the problems of the reformer. In 2008 Sebastien designed the Megaformer which is the machine you use in SLT. STL is the first Megaformer studio in New York and opened a little over a month ago.

STL is a 50 minute class that is done entirely on the megaformer. The megaformer looks like a glorified reformer if you have ever used one in a pilates class. It is pretty simple to use, I really liked the design but that didn’t last long. As soon as we started I was like wow I am not strong. It was one of the most intense workouts I have been put through and I loved all 50 minutes of it. We did a series of different arm and leg workouts with names I can not remember at the moment because I was concentrating so hard on my form. I thought this was amazing class, it is a great strength training class that flew by, normally when I am doing weight training it seems to drag on but STL seemed to fly by. I thought it was a great combination of pilates and strength training. It is very similar to barre classes like Core Fusion, Barre Method or Physique 57 but you use a machine which I really like. Also like barre classes it is expensive :/

Which I don’t like but your first class is $20 and I highly recommend you try it once. After your first time a single class is $40. STL does offer packages and private sessions.

If you live in New York and you are a fan of barre classes or pilates I highly recommend that you check out STL. If you don’t live in New York there are also studios located in California, Boston, Atlanta, and Texas just to name a few. You can see a list of all the studios here. Trust me this was an amazing workout and I hope I can go back soon!

Review: Equinox Fitness

Equinox Fitness is known as the mecca of fitness clubs in New York. Equinox Fitness is based in New York City and has 48 clubs total around the country  in: Northern and Southern California, Texas, Chicago, Washington DC, Connecticut, Boston, and Florida. There are 18 locations in New York City, 1 location in Brooklyn, 3 on Long Island and 2 in Westchester. What makes Equinox so alluring?

Equinox strives themselves on having the best of the best and they have every right to say this. All of their classes are amazing, I have not taken one class at Equinox that I wasn’t impressed with. They currently have Inten-Sati, taught by the founder Patricia Moreno, Jukari Fit to Fly (which can currently only be found in Equinox and Reebok clubs in the US), Urban Rebounding with the founder JB Burns, and Tabata 2010 (which I have still yet to take but I can’t wait to try).

Equinox has a partnership with Kiehl’s Since 1851 and they carry their locker amenities in every club! Say goodbye to generic locker room products when you workout at Equinox, you will be showering with the best. They offer all the amenities you could need in the locker room, except for locks, so don’t forget yours! All clubs of Equinox are kept extremely up to date and clean. I have been able to visit multiple clubs around the country and I haven’t walked into one that was not kept in perfect condition. 4 Locations in New York City have Lap Pools: 63rd Street, Columbus Circle, 54h Street, and Greenwich.

Is the gym crowded? I have to say every gym in New York is crowded, especially after work. If you plan on working out after work you will have to make it through the crowd. But I feel that every gym in New York City is like this. If you want to work out alone, learn to wake up in the morning ;)

A for personal trainers, Equinox has some of the best personal trainers around. In a couple of clubs around the Country Equinox have private clubs called “E” that has trainers who work one-on-one with clients every time they come into the club. I got to go with my Dad to workout with his trainer once and I was never in so much pain. Don’t worry it was a good pain :) .

As for clientele Equinox has a mix, because of high prices you see an older crowd. But the younger people do not stay away, many can be seen in their clubs. I have to say it is a good mix. Now all good things have a catch and Equinox’s catch is the price. They are pretty honorable that they do not change their monthly dues. The last time I checked monthly dues are $180 a month in New York. The one thing that can change depending on if they are offering promotions is the one time membership fee that you pay in the beginning.

So overall if you have the money, Equinox is an amazing Fitness Club, it would be my top choice.  If  you don’t have the money (like me) no worries! E-mail I have some amazing clubs that are affordable for the budget conscience gym-goer.

Oh and a celebrity sighting at Equinox, when I was taking Jukari Fit to Fly, Heather Graham was taking Inten-Sati. She looks great!

Review: David Barton Gym Astor Place

Look Good Naked. Who doesn’t want to look good naked, honestly with the horrible fashion sense I seem to have, I should at least look good naked, so I went to the one place that’s lives by that motto. David Barton Gym. I first heard about this gym when I lived in Chicago, I heard it had the most unique atmosphere and that each gym was designed  to be completely different. I decided to check out the Astor Place location. Walking in the first thing I noticed was the arms on all of the trainers, they are huge! Which doesn’t surprise me because with an owner like David Barton, you probably strive to be like him. His personal motto is: “You only go around once. You might as well do it in a beautiful body.” The whole idea behind his gym is a cool place to workout, you don’t have to workout in a boring gym.

The gym has 3.5 floors: the main floor which houses the lobby, a cardio theater, membership services and a small store that sells some of the most random stuff I have ever seen. The top floor holds the aerobic studio, another cardio theater, and all free weights. The basement holds a coat check (which I was told I could take any jacket ;) ) the Women’s locker room, the pilates studio, and the yoga studio. The sub basement (hence the 3.5 floors) holds the Men’s locker room and the spin studio.

The gym is beautiful! It is by far one of the most beautifully designed gyms I have seen. The floors are all hardwood, the fitness equipment is all the most up-to date-equipment, each with their own tvs and iPod hook ups. The lighting is what they call Shakespeare lighting, which makes the gym much dimmer than most and is highlight

ed with accents of blues, purples and yellows. There is a huge disco ball on the top floor where DJs come a play music Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays. The Women’s locker room is beautiful, it was not like any gym locker room I have ever seen. It is like a night club bathroom and everything is done in dark wood, they have all the amenities you need like: towels, hair dryers, shampoo, and razors.

David Barton offers many of classes and all the classes are taught by their trainers. You can take classes like: Guns, Ass Blast, Six Pack Attack, Yoga for Jocks, and Liquid Yoga. One of the things David Barton prides themselves on is their trainers, they were voted best Trainers in New York in Time Out Magazine.

Overall I loved the gym, I will tell you, it is true what they say in the reviews almost everyone that works out here is good-looking and it is like working out in a night club. Low lights, loud music and a DJ. If you need a fun environment to workout in that is aesthetically pleasing this is the gym for you.

David Barton has two locations in New York, Astor Place and Chelsea (23rd and 7th). They also have a location that is solely for private training. As for pricing, enrollment fee is $400. For one location it is $125 a month, both locations is $130 a month and a Travel membership which will give you access to any of the David Barton Locations (Miami, Chicago, New York and Seattle) for $140 a month. After visiting this is not a bad price for a high-end gym. It is less than Equinox ($170 a month). Sometimes you can get lucky and go in when they are offering no enrollment fees to join. If you are interested in joining I suggest you go see Renee Campos at Astor Place, he is extremely helpful.

One of my good friends just said it perfectly… David Barton Gyms are SEXXY. (Yes sexxy with two “x’s”)
