I have decided to add interviews to Shape Up in the City, I have some very exciting people lined up but to start off I talked with Country Music Artist, Whitney Duncan.
For those of you who don’t know who Whitney Duncan is, she is an American Country Music Artist, who has charted on the U.S. country singles charts with “When I Said I Would” and “Skinny Dippin’,”. In 2007 Whitney was a finalist on USA Network’s television show Nashville Star. After appearing on the show she signed with Warner Brother Records in Nashville. She currently has her debut Album: Whitney Duncan out and her new album,”Road Right Now” coming out on Tuesday, April 20th! I have always been impressed with Whitney and how she stays in such great shape with the crazy schedule she has so I decided to find out how she does it!
K: You look great! How do you stay in such great shape? What is your daily fitness routine?
W: My daily routine varies from either a run or hot yoga. I don’t like to do both on the same day. I also try to do arms (push ups & weights), legs & butt (lunges, etc.), and abs a couple of times a week. Strength training is easy to slack on for me because I don’t enjoy it (especially legs & butt).
K: On Twitter I notice you go on a lot of 5 mile runs, do you love running?
W: I LOVE running. It’s a stress relief for me. I just like to crank up some music & go. I don’t run fast, but I can run pretty far.
K:What does you diet consist of? Are you vegan, keep a food journal, do you like to cook ect?
W: I hate cooking & unfortunately I love sweets. The only meat I eat is fish (favorite food is sushi) & a good steak occasionally. I’m lactose intolerant, so I try to stay away from dairy for the most part (except my binges on ice cream). I try to eat a lot of veggies, fruits, & whole grains. Try does not always mean succeed.
K: Since your constantly on the road, how do you stay in shape?
W: I always try to do something. Even if that means doing crunches in a hotel room or using whatever equipment that’s in the hotel fitness room. I also can take DVD fitness tapes & play them on my computer.
K: With the ACM’s coming up, how do you get red carpet ready?
W: I cut out sugar. & that’s really hard for me.
K: How do you stay motivated to workout and eat healthy when things get very busy?
W: I start feeling really guilty. I have to work out or I feel terrible. The more I workout the more energy I have & the healthier I eat.
K: What advice can you give to people who are getting back in shape and trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
W: Write down everything you put in your mouth & you’ll realize we eat a lot more than we should. I know I do. When I first started seeing what I was eating everyday I couldn’t believe what all I put in my body. I can eat like a man!! Bad.
K: What do you do in your time off?
W: Watch tv & movies, hike, do anything outdoors, read books, take long bubble baths, hang out with friends, family, and my dog Duchess
.
K: What is your guilty pleasure that you love to eat?
W: Chocolate, ice cream, pizza, & Krispie Kreme chocolate covered donuts. I’m an all or nothing kinda girl, so if it’s in the house I’m eating it all. So I have to be careful not to buy it. If I take 1 bite of ice cream the whole pint will be finished off in a matter of minutes
K: Are you a fan of Jamie Oliver’s and how do you feel about what he is trying to do with Food Revolution?
W: I’ve only seen it once, but I think what he’s doing is great!! People need to be aware that it’s not about being “skinny” as much as it is being healthy. I mean do we want to live longer or do we want to keep stuffing ourselves with hamburgers & french fries? Up until about 2 years ago, I just ate whatever…2 bowls of Lucky Charms for breakfast, bacon, biscuits, & fried everything! I was in L.A., and I’m like “what’s this tofu crap”? I now love it. So if you try eating healthy, you will eventually get used to it & possibly even enjoy it.
K: Your new album, “Road Right Now” is coming out on April 20th! What was your inspiration for this album? What was your favorite part of making the album?
W: My life was my inspiration. I co-wrote every song, so they are all personal to me. This album is like a piece of my heart. I love it, & I hope everyone else does too!!!
My favorite part of making the record was writing the songs. After writing a song I feel like I’ve really achieved something (even when it’s not a great song). I also love staying away from the studio for a couple of days, then going back in to hear the mix & falling in love with it. When that happens, it’s a great moment.
K: Okay one last question, is there any certain song on this album you are especially proud of or we should pay close attention too?
W: My favorites are “So Sorry Mama” & “Burn It Down”. I just love playing those live. ”Open Road” is about growing up in small town & following these dreams. They are all me, so it’s really hard to choose 1…it changes every show. I really love “Away” too…& “Little By Little”…see what I mean. :)
Special thanks to Whitney for taking for time out to do this interview. I hope you all enjoyed it and look forward to more interviews to come. Check out Whitney’s Website where you can pre-order: “Road Right Now” coming out April 20th!
