On February 28th, in Central Park, Run for Congo Women, will be holding a 5 mile run to raise money for Congolese women. “Run for Congo Women is a grassroots movement benefiting Women for Women International‘s Congo program. There are currently seven organized Runs For Congo Women events around the country. The Congo presents one of the world’s deadliest emergencies to date. More than 5.4 million people have died since 1998. Gang rape and brutal torture are a daily reality for the women and children of Congo.”
The conflict in Congo is the most lethal situation since World War II and has claimed over five million lives. I just found a column written in the NY Times about the brutality Congolese women suffer and found it both heart wrenching and inspiring, you can read it here.
My Aunt’s friend will be running along with 14 other women, on her team, on February 28th to raise money for this cause. If you would like to donate to help their team (they are so close to their goal), donations can be made here. If you would like to help this cause and participate in a future run you can go to www.runforcongowomen.org for more information. It says another run/walk in New York is to be scheduled soon. You are also able to host a run but there are upcoming runs in: Morrison,Colorado; Portland, Oregon; Phoenix, Arizona; and Chicago, IL.
I will definitely be getting involved with this cause and I hope you can too.

This is awesome! I did a lot of research for my undergrad work about the treatment of women in Congo. I wish there was a run in Dallas. I’ll just have to contribute to the relay.
