Today I went to check out 24 Hour Fitness in Madison Square Park. It’s located on the Northwest corner of Madison Square Park between 5th Ave and Madison. The easiest way to get there is the R/W train 28th street location or the 6 train 28th street location. I had read many mixed reviews before I went so I didn’t know what to expect. The lobby has a circular front desk
when you walk in. A juice bar is to the right and membership services are to the left. The front desk staff was very friendly and found someone to show me the club right away. Even though it was 6:45 there were membership representatives there which is very nice because at most gyms their membership representatives leave at 6:00pm.
All the cardio machines are located on the street level. Each cardio machine has their own TVs and iPod hook up so you can listen to your music or iPod workout. They have bikes, treadmills (that range between 25 degrees and 45 degrees), stair climbers, and various ellipticals. For being 7pm in New York City, there were surprisily a lot of machines open which is nice. The lower level has all of their weight machines, free weights, stretching room, spin room, and dance studio. There are about 25 bikes in the spin studio and the dance studio is very spacious. They offer a variety of different classes that you do not have to pay extra for. All their machines are nicely spaced out so you don’t feel to claustrophobic. The only area that felt a little tight was the free weights. The locker rooms have all the amenities you need: towels, soap, shampoo, a few blow dryers, and razors. They also offer monthly locker and laundry service.
The club was really clean which I was very impressed with. The membership representative was very nice and answered any and all questions I had. Now for pricing. There is a $29.99 initiation fee, which is waived if you are a student. The club is a month to month membership. When you join you pay the first and last month (whenever your last month is). Right now the monthly fee is $69.99 but on Thursday, February 25th they are raising their prices to $110 a month. This monthly fee includes all locations in New York. In New York there are 3 locations. Madison Square Park, Soho, and 53rd street (this location has a pool). All 24 Hour Fitness Clubs in New York are Ultra Fitness which means all amenities are included in your monthly price. Also all clubs are open 24 hours a day, kind of crazy but apparently there are people who come at crazy hours.
24 Hour Fitness Clubs are privately owned, they were started in the West Coast and if you look at the map you can see they are everywhere, they are now trying to expand their clubs on the East Coast. You have probably heard of 24 Hour Fitness on Biggest Loser, as all of the trainers on that show are from 24 Hour Fitness.
Overall I was very impressed, it was super clean and offered everything I needed. I really like the $69.99 a month price but $110 will be pushing it for me.

I am amazed at how many classes and gyms you are trying! Can’t wait for you to try Core Fusion Cardio! So good!
Is this a Derek Jetter branded location? I can’t believe how affordable the price is right now. I may look up that midtown location as I need a place to swim.
This used to be my gym!! I used to live on 26th and Lex and now I live in Soho right next to the 24 hour fitness! haha too bad I’m poor though and had to cancel my membership!
I checked out the 24 Hour Fitness website for membership, and it looks like the all access (in NYC) fee is still $69.99/month as of April 2010!
They lied to me lol! I didn’t think they would change their prices. 1. That would be a huge change 2. I can’t imagine people would want to pay for that when they already know their prices and they have always seemed to be pretty good.
Just wanted to leave an up-to-date price. I newly joined the gym during their memorial day promotion and join for $79.99 a month to go only to the Madison Square Park location (no initiation fee at that time). The price is $89.99 to be able to go to all locations. I have been going for a month now and the price seems to be the same as they always have a stand posting that price outside the gym. Not sure if initiation is now included since I assume the promotion is now up. Now that I have been going for a month now I would pretty much agree with all your points on this club. Very clean and the 5 PM crowd is not too crowded as I assume other gyms get. Zumba classes are awesome!
DON’T BOTHER TO SIGN UP!!! More than half of the treadmils the tvs are out of order or the entire machine itself is out if order! You would think that after being a member for over a year AND a member increase they would fix them. Now that the weather is getting warm outside the AC is barely on!!! The cleanliness has declined, the towels some times smell when they’re supposed to be clean, the juice bar almost always have brown/black bananas. I can go on and on. I raised these issues with someone at the front desk and she had no explanation or didn’t bother to say “well we’re working on it” nothing!!! The manager overheard me speaking with her and hid behind some sort of door file holder and didn’t even address me. For all of this I’d rather go elsewhere. *new former member*
