The Sprouted Difference

I recently switched all my bread to Ezekiel 4:9® Organic Sprouted Whole Grain Bread. At first I was skeptical when I heard sprouted grain, I had no idea what that meant.

Ezekiel bread is a Food for Life brand that offers other products like: breads, english muffins, cereals, pasta, pocket breads, and tortillas. As of right now I have only tried the Ezekiel Organic Sprouted Whole Grain Bread and I do not taste a difference between it and whole wheat bread. I bought the tortilla’s too and after I try those I will let you know what I think.

“Sprouted grain bread has numerous advantages over “enriched” wheat flour breads. Enriched Wheat Flour Breads are made from the endosperm of the wheat kernel (the inside portion), which contains primarily carbohydrates and few vitamins and minerals. Ezekiel 4:9® Organic Sprouted Whole Grain Products have increased vitamin content generated by the sprouting process and contain a superior quality protein that closely parallels the protein found in milk and eggs, containing all 9 essential amino acids. In total, there are 18 amino acids present in this unique bread.”

You can find Ezekiel Products in the freezer section of Whole Foods, freezer section of Trader Joes, on Fresh Direct and other health food stores. It is not too bad price wise its $4.95 each. So if you would like a healthier alternative to your bread I would give this a try. Even though, sprouted grain, sounds funny, there is not a big taste difference. You’re Sick, Should you Workout?

I can be a pretty stubborn person, especially when I finally get into a workout routine, I do not like to miss a day. Even when I get sick… I used to believe that I was invincible and I could power through it and maybe, magically, it would help me get better. I was WRONG, very, very wrong. It took me talking to my nutritionist, Kayleigh, and reading an article on CNN to believe that working out while being sick is not a good idea.

When you get sick there is an infection in your body, and your body will need all of your energy to fight it off. By working out you are pushing your body to fatigue and not leaving any energy to help fight off the infection. As Kayleigh says “You can only work as hard as you can “let go,” and respecting yourself when you are sick is part of the “letting go” that leads to optimal wellness.” If you take one day off and rest, the next day (when you are hopefully better) will make you want to work that much harder because you had to miss a day. Start listening to your body, don’t push it when it can’t.

In the CNN article “Should you Workout When your Sick?”  Dr. Kellerman, of the American Academy of Family Physicians, says “I tell people to listen to their bodies. If they are sick, their body is telling them something is wrong. Even though it may be tempting to not break an exercise routine, working out may actually prolong the illness. And, in rare cases “viruses can damage heart muscles,” he added. Kellerman said it is a myth that you can sweat out germs and toxins. He acknowledges that “low levels of exercise increase endorphins and benefit the body, but an intense workout that creates high levels of endorphins can wear down the immune system.” In other words, “Don’t count on endorphins to heal you,” he said.

So if your sick this Winter or you feel like you are starting to get sick, do yourself and your body a favor. Stay home, lay in bed and watch movies! Your body will thank you. And then when you are better, get back to your routine and work harder than before.

I asked Kayleigh to recommend some good foods for when you are sick:

  • Easily digested foods that don’t make your body work too hard (your immune system is mostly in your intestines). These include: vegetable soups, chicken soups, oatmeal, salads, and light protein like chicken and fish. Stay away from high-fat foods and sweets.
  • Drink tons of water!!
  • Hot tea, especially ginger tea because ginger is full of virus-fighting substances
  • Load up on fruits and veggies, which are full of anti-oxidants
  • Garlic: the most potent anti´viral and anti-bacterial around. Add it to all your meals. Raw is best!
  • Grapefruit: full of vitamin and a potent liver detoxifier (the liver has to work overtime to detoxify the body when you are sick)

Review: Jana Klauer M.D., Everyday Nutrition Shakes

My co-worker, who is extremely healthy, kept bringing in these health shakes every morning and I decided I finally had to try one. Now I have had slim fast and I am not a fan, it always left me hungry. I don’t think I will ever be able to drink a meal but I thought I would give this shake a try. It is called Dr. Jana Klauer’s Everyday Nutrition Protein Shakes. Dr. Klauer “is a New York City based physician whose clinical expertise in nutrition, metabolic adaptation to exercise, and biology of body fat regulation has made her one of the country’s leading authorities in her field.” She has written two books, How the Rich Get Thin and The Park Avenue Nutritionist ‘s Plan. Currently she is the national director of Nutrition for Equinox Health Clubs. She created protein shakes to help her clients lose weight and a couple years ago they were made available for consumer purchase.

“Dr. Klauer’s Everyday Nutrition protein shakes are high in omega 3 and protein. With only 180 calories, 20 grams protein, 400 mg calcium, and 700 mg omega 3 fat (EPA and DHA), the ready to drink protein shakes pack a powerful punch! The formulation naturally suppresses hunger for four hours while omega 3 fats, EPA and DHA, have been shown to reduce risk for heart disease, cancer and depression. The typical American diet is deficient in omega-3 fat. Dr. Klauer has produced a powerful tool for weight loss and disease prevention but has also taken extra care to make sure that this protein shake tastes delicious – not too sweet and no aftertaste.”

After reading this I decided I would give it a try. I picked one of her shakes up at The Garden of Eden in Chelsea. She has two flavors Rich Cocoa and Vanilla Bean. The only one they had available was vanilla bean so my choice was easy. I had the shake for lunch today and I was really surprised. It was really good, it almost tasted like tapioca pudding. It did not have a bitter after taste or a weird texture. It did not suppress my hunger though, watching everyone eat what the ordered for lunch, around me was not fun. I don’t know if this is because I really don’t believe in drinking a meal or if this shake really doesn’t suppress your appetite. The shake’s ingredients are pretty good for you but it has 510mg of sodium! Which is a lot of salt if you ask me and salt makes you hungry so that is never a good thing.

Her shakes were featured in Martha and Men’s Health. Men’s Health said “…this is the healthiest ready-to-drink protein shake we’ve found.” Granted they said this back in 2007 they still said it ;) . She says if you follow her diet plan and use these shakes to replace 1-2 meals a day, you will see weight loss. But it all depends on your body type. These shakes are pricey though, for a 24 pack it will cost you $114 from her website, $14.99 for a 4 pack from Fresh Direct and $4.95 for one from Garden of Eden.

My opinion: they are very tasty and if I am in a hurry in the morning this wouldn’t make a bad breakfast. This is not sufficient enough to be my lunch though.
