Review: Physique 57

The first Lotte Berk Method Studio I tried in New York was Physique 57. I had heard great things about it from my instructors and I also heard that Kelly Ripa worked out there. What is not to love. I showed up at the 57 Street location. It was in the New York Gallery Building so I had to take an elevator up, which was a little annoying. Before the class I had gone online ahead of time and reserved a spot. I noticed all the late afternoon and evening classes were filled (that would not be good if I moved here) so I signed up for a basic level morning class because all the open level classes were filled. They offer buy one get one free for new students which is great! After getting off the elevator I found the Physique 57 door and entered. I entered a small waiting room with some retail on the wall and a reception desk. There was only one couch and it was filled with ladies. The receptionist was nice but not very helpful. I put my stuff away in the locker room and went into class.

Since I had taken class for a couple months now I knew exactly what to look for. The room was extremely small and square. The class was so full that every spot at the bar had been taken which made the room feel claustrophobic. That right away was not okay. When you feel like you can’t breath and you may step on someone it is hard to concentrate on yourself. The teacher walked around during class but gave no instruction. She didn’t help position people, which is huge in the Lotte Berk Method and she was not good at explaining what we were doing. The teacher did a pretzel for glutes work which is a more complicated move that I know I needed help on and she did not help the positioning at all. Finally when the class was finished, we stretched and were out. The girls piled out and the room got very crowded. Overall I was very disappointed, the studio was very small, the instruction was very poor, and no one made me feel welcomed. I left wanting my Pure Barre back and hoping that Core Fusion at Exhale would be better. I would not survive New York if I did not have this class in my life.

  1. Did you ever go back for your second class from the buy 2 for price of 1 deal? I felt exactly the same way when I went. I tried once class at 57th and one downtown. Downtown was slightly larger. Did you feel that you got a good workout though? I felt like it was a very hard class, faster paced than CF but not in a good way.
